Jurgen Klopp takes aim at Liverpool fans: Stay home for Arsenal unless you are noisy

Liverpool manager was unhappy at the atmosphere in first-half against West Ham when, despite a fine performance, his side were 1-0 up

Mike McGrath at Anfield

Jürgen Klopp took aim at Liverpool fans after the Carabao Cup thrashing of West Ham, telling them to stay at home this weekend for the Premier League title clash against Arsenal unless they generate the right atmosphere at Anfield.

Klopp was unhappy with the reaction of supporters during a first-half when his team were only 1-0 up, just days after the goalless draw against rivals Manchester United. And after his team ran out 5-1 winners, setting up a semi-final against Fulham, he demanded a change from supporters for Saturday when his team face the league leaders.

“I thought in the first-half when the boys played really exceptionally, I was not overly happy with the atmosphere behind me. I asked people what do they want?” Klopp said.

“We changed a lot of things and we dominated West Ham like crazy and missed chances. If I was in the stands I would be on my toes, 1,000 per cent. I don’t know if the Man United game was that bad that we have to say sorry we didn’t smash them.

“We need Anfield on Saturday. Arsenal didn’t play this week, they prepared for this game and anyone who knows anything about them knows they will be prepared. So we need Anfield on their toes from the first second, without me having an argument with the opposition coach.

“If it is too much football in December, if you are not in the right shape, give your ticket to somebody else. It was just not the excitement I felt. There were so many good performances but we were only 1-0 up.”

After both teams made six changes to their teams from the weekend, Liverpool took control of the game and led through Dominik Szoboszlai’s 25-yard drive, with West Ham jeered off at half-time after failing to have a shot on goal.

Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo added to the scoreline before Jarrod Bowen pulled one back, having been declared Klopp’s favourite player outside his own squad ahead of the game.

“Probably my favourite player besides all my players I have to say. It’s great what he is doing and how he has developed,” said Klopp on Sky Sports.

Jones and Mohamed Salah added more goals before the final whistle to put Liverpool within sight of the trophy they won two seasons ago, during a campaign when they won both domestic cups.

Klopp insisted his team were not significantly different to the weekend when they failed to score against United.

“Of course there was a difference, a couple of things didn’t fit on Sunday which fit today,” he said. “I am not allowed to talk about what Manchester United did, we played against a deep defending opponent. Some good goalie saves, our decision making wasn’t great.

“Today we scored in those moments, the difference is sometimes one inch. Second half we did it and 2-0 was Curtis, through the legs, cheeky but we need luck. Cody’s a wonderful goal but similar situations, we had a lot of really good performances, individually, probably better than on Sunday that is how it is and tonight is one of the nights where we could enjoy the game. A really good performance in all departments.”

David Moyes’ barren run at Anfield continued – he has never won there as a manager – and he admitted he was concerned at how many West Ham could concede.

Moyes, who made six changes to the side that beat Wolves in the league, said: “The best part was we got in at half-time only 1-0 down and it gave us a bit of a chance.

“I’ve got to say, I’ve been here lots of times and been beaten lots of times but tonight was probably the one where I thought: ‘My goodness, how many more are they going to get tonight?’.

“We weren’t strong enough. I thought the second goal was the biggest turning point. We got in at 1-0, had done well to keep it at that but the second goal was a killer.”

West Ham cleared to sign impressive forward for just £15-20m

West Ham United could reportedly be cleared to sign a new striker on the cheap this January.

According to Football Insider, the Hammers have been scouting Montpellier striker Akor Adams in recent times, while Fulham are also mentioned as potential suitors for the 23-year-old.

Both West Ham and Fulham are said to be keen on strengthening up front this winter, and Football Insider state that Adams could be available for as little as round £15-20m.

This could be a huge opportunity for the two London clubs, so it will be interesting to see if either side step up their interest in the young Nigerian in the next few days or weeks.

West Ham’s inconsistent form this term surely means David Moyes needs to make some changes this January, and Adams looks like he could be an ideal option to breathe new life into this team.

Football Insider add that Adams has been compared to his fellow countryman, Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, which is some compliment indeed.
